                Wow, what a great year we are having! We are really learning how to be a class community that is respectful and responsible.   We have learned how to predict; a skill all good readers have!!  We are practicing all the children’s names in our class, and introduced our weekly ‘look’ words.  ‘Look’ words are 3 or 4 new words every week that we practice reading, then put up on our word wall!!  So far we have I, like, love, at, it, the, and, to, my, is, am, and we on our wall!!  Please practice these words at home also- flash cards are a great idea!  We have also met with our 2^nd grade buddies!  We love to draw pictures and read with them.

        In math we have been recognizing, extending, and creating patterns, talking about pattern blocks, and teen numbers!!  We are going to begin to graph!  We talk a lot about what math is and how to think about math! We also love counting!  We count everything- forwards and backwards!!!!(even by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s)

October is bug month, and we will talk about what makes an insect an insect- (6 legs, 3 body parts, etc.).  We will read lots of bug, insect, and spider books!!We have had lots of mystery readers, including parents, students from past years- and even some children from this year!!!!!!!!  Let me know when you are ready to come on in and READ!!! Little books in a bag should be coming home every night except Friday.  Again, I stress the importance of reading these books, and other books, with your children and REALLY celebrating when they begin to help you and eventually take over the ‘reading’. 

        We will continue to do writing workshop, focusing on what words and sentences are, upper and lower case letters and sounds, and sounding words out.   We talk about what good readers and writers do and we are learning strategies to make connections to help us learn and think more about reading!   In math, we will continue to graph, look at patterns, and begin to get very familiar with numbers.  Listen for more insect information from your kindergartner- we love to study insects!!!!!!!!!!  We also will continue to discuss hibernation and migration!  We learned about fall and will have fun with Halloween!!
