Each year Reader's Digest sponsors its National Word Power Challenge for grades 4 through 8. The four levels of competition are:
1. All students take the Preliminary Practice Classroom Challenge, a written test consisting of 25 questions.
2. The 5 top-scoring students from each homeroom compete in the Final Classroom Challenge to determine one winner from each homeroom.
3. The homeroom champions from each grade compete in the Grade Level Challenge to determine one winner per grade.
4. The winner from each grade will take the on-line Qualifying Test by January 31st.
5. Fifth grade top-scoring students are notified of their achievement by state officials. The top one hundred sixth and seventh grade students from Pennsylvania are eligible to compete in the state competition.
6. The winner from each state competition then competes in the National Championship in Orlando, Florida which is televised and hosted by Al Roker.
Winners of the National Contest receive college scholarships:
1st Place $25,000
2nd Place $15,000
3rd Place $10,000
